Dr. Forrest Murphy, M.D., FACS, has specialized in advanced cataract surgery, refractive surgery, and general ophthalmology throughout his distinguished four-decade career. He has been a key part of Azul Vision for several years and was recently appointed Medical Director for Coachella Valley. Dr. Murphy earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1978 and initially worked as an ER physician for four years before pursuing a residency in Ophthalmology at the same institution. He became Board Certified for life in 1985 and was honored as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1989.
Dr. Murphy was a pioneer in the use of topical anesthesia for eye surgery in the mid-1990s, contributing significantly to the technique and being one of its early adopters. He has shared his knowledge with colleagues at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and taught residents, fellows, and staff as a clinical instructor at UCSD. He has delivered lectures on cataract and refractive surgery in the United States and Mexico, spending much of his career serving the communities of San Francisco, San Diego, and Palm Springs for the last decade.
In his career, Dr. Murphy estimates he has performed around 15,000 cataract surgeries and is experienced in all types of anterior segment surgery, including the use of Femtosecond cataract lasers and Toric and Multifocal lenses. He is proficient with ORA and all ophthalmic lasers and has integrated MIG procedures with cataract surgery for glaucoma patients.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Murphy is an accomplished pianist and an aspiring fiction writer. He maintains his health and wellness by working out four days a week and enjoys hiking, mountain excursions, weekend getaways, and fine dining. He is happily married and has a soft-coated Wheaten terrier named KC.
